if you fork out a small more on the solar panel, sharp (i reckon) has a triple layer cell that is around 40% efficient (there are probably more but this one i’ve seen around )
im not saying it would eliminate the heat sink but would mean 1/3rd less heat energy.
March 3rd, 2010 at 3:30 am
@jaffa25 A heat sink behind the PV cell is essential. Most silicon cells have a max operating temp of only 60C.
At the focal point of even a small 1m dish you’ll get 600 – 800C. If the cells are 10% efficient that means the heat sink must remove the remaining 90% of the heat.
This can be drawn off for water heating, steam generation and/or some kind of power generation using either stirling or rankine cycle.

get a smaller solar panel and capture the sun from a greater area.
works out a lot cheaper to use a large mirror and small cell than just using a large cell…
a heatsink might be needed depending on the area/season but thats pretty straight forward

i agree. what more can i do with this than boil a bottle of water and burn sticks? i have a solar water heater in mind as an outdoor bathroom application. and maybe burn a hole in a steak. i want to know what more can be done with this than possibly burning down my outhouse

Really useful mirror guys
even Your project fails, you can use it for shaving yr Balls
March 3rd, 2010 at 6:35 am
You could make a bunch and place them in a circle and focus all the focal points to a single point, say pointing at a metal boiling pot or some steam engine or something

i dont go green i go toxic green
March 3rd, 2010 at 8:02 am
BRILLIANT! You made 30 of them!?!?
March 3rd, 2010 at 8:02 am
Ok.. all of the videos I see posted on this subject don’t say what we are to do with that concentrated heat. Why go thru all that distress just to light sticks? How do you apply this to heating water or your home or making electricity? FYI I don’t own a home, but if I had one I could figure it out myself… I’m trying to come up with ways to apply this stuff to heating an apartment I rent.

re;
post from Sept.
You need fireproof foam for the walls or cushion behind the drywall. Even a thin layer will work. The sound vibrations transfer through hard surfaces. Try prosoundfoam com

You’re completely on the incorrect track for sound insulation. A solar dish isn’t the answer haha. You need soundproof egg crate type soundex foam to absorb your noise. Carpet will absorb some sound but not near as much as materials made for this purpose.

But you won’t need to add reflective coating to bounce sound waves. The reflective coating is only needed for solar applications. The bare dish will work perfectly.

kmsdadog – Those are probably not reflecting onto PV panels, this may increase their output, but it will greatly decrease their lifespan.
They are probably collectors focusing on heating some liquid to generate electricity in a turbine or other manner.

Dan you ROCK.
I just pulled one of these from a neighbors dumpster after helping my father in law build a dish from scratch (3 footer from cardboard and chrome vinyl) now I can make my own for freeeee. nice.
March 3rd, 2010 at 11:21 am
ok, im new at all this, can this be used to reflect the sun rays onto a soler panel?.. I hear the Israeli’s have this to power large wattage inverters for hospitals and government buildings…so, will it help or not?…thanks.

18″ dish won’t boil water? It should but will take awhile to reach boiling. What type of reflective coating were you using, aluminum foil?

I’m trying to keep the sound in, since I have a movie theatre stereo system that is hooked up now, but can still be heard from outside. The room its in is like a guest room, not too furnished or anything.
March 3rd, 2010 at 2:50 pm
Yes, it will. Just place the mic at the focal point.
Also with your Neighbors, are you keeping their sound out, our your sound in?
